Hertford Swimming Club

Welcome to Hertford Swimming Club

Text Box: TIMEKEEPERS COURSE
Hertford Swimming Club needs more officials, especially timekeepers. This is the first step on the road to becoming a judge or even a referee. In the past many of our parents have done the course and qualified. It is up to you then to decide if you want to go further or stay as a timekeeper. The course will be run on Sunday 26th Feb at Haileybury starting with a theory classroom session at 3.15 followed by a practical session and finishing around 6.00pm. If you are interested please speak to Jane.

MAJOR LEAGUE R2
Message from Steve:-

“Hertford performed very well in the second round of Major League at Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.  Despite being short of several swimmers across some age groups owing to late withdrawals we managed a very solid fifth place again.  Many swimmers found themselves being asked to swim-up age groups on the evening and I was pleased with their response.  There were 10 individual PBs on the night together with 5 relay best times.  Special mention to both Daniel Tarry and Ben Ransome who, although not feeling 100%, swam in seven events between them.
“Although we have not received the official results this fifth place together with our fifth place in the previous round should give us an excellent chance in the final round to stay in Division 1 for another season.  We do need to remember that we have just over 100 swimmers to select our representative teams from whereas nearly all of the other clubs in this division have double our membership and several run two teams.
“If selected for the final round can I request that all swimmers  and parents make every effort to be available.  Again I emphasise that some swimmers might only get one swim and that might not be on their favoured discipline but that swim could make all the difference.
Well done all.”

MORE SUCCESS
Hertford swimmers were busy again once more over the weekend competing at Bishops Stortford & Biggleswade Open Meets. At Stortford, Sarah O’Brien won a silver in the 200 Breast, Josh Purcell a silver (IM) and bronze (Breast + CQT) and Neo Metz a bronze (Free). Menawhile at Biggleswade Ben Ransome went a few steps closer to holding all the junior records with now just the 100 & 200 Fly eluding him. Ben’s wins in the 50 Fly, 50 Free & 50 Breast were all new junior records along with his 3rd in the 50 back and his 5th in the 200 breast. He also won the 100 Free. Calum Grieg and Maddy Smith also achieved CQTs. Results here

MAJOR LEAGUE R1
Full results at last! We finished 5th on the night which was an excellent result in a very difficult first round draw. Well done everyone. Results here.

MORE SUCCESS AT WATFORD OPEN MEET
Almost 50 swimmers competed at the Watford Open Meet last weekend and the results were excellent. Ben and Ashley Ransome recorded RQT’s as did Sarah O’Brien for the first time. There were also 3 Club Records and 2 junior records. 61 CQT’s were also recorded and there were 99 PB’s. There were 13 gold medals, 9 silvers and 9 bronzes along with 3 Speeding tickets for exceeding the entry time. The biggest medal haul went to Neo Metz (3 golds and 2 silvers). Grace King won 2 golds and a silver, Ben Ransome 2 golds, a silver and a speeding ticket and Ashley Ransoem 2 golds and a speeding ticket. Other gold medallists were Tom Disney, Brodie Caress, Patrick Tarry & Calum Grieg.

WELL DONE BETH
Congratulations to Beth Fitzsimmons who now holds the Club Record for the 1500 Free

THE CHAIR IS STILL EMPTY!
We are still urgently looking for someone to take over from John O’Brien as Chairman (or Chairlady!) John’s work commitments mean he will be abroad for the early part of next year and he will not be able to carry on as acting Chairman. Please would everyone think whether they could take on the role. Ideally it would be a parent with a child or children who swim regularly for the club. No particular skills are needed other than enthusiasm for Hertford Swimming Club and an ability to get on with people. The Committee is very supportive and the work is shared about so the position is not too onerous. It is YOUR Club and can not function without the support of members and parents so please come forward if you think you could be out new Chair. Speak to John or any Committee Member.

ASA COMPETITIVE STROKE AWARDS
Of special interest to our younger swimmers, did you know that you are entitled to purchase ASA stroke awards when you achieve certain times for every stroke over 25, 50, 100 & 200m. Awards come in bronze, silver, gold and platinum and times have to be achieved in competition or at an organised time trial. For more information look here or contact Cayt Tarry

CHILDPOWER
British Swimming have introduced a new section to their website called Childpower. A link is available at the top of this webpage (click on the little fish). Do encourage your young swimmers to have a look. There is also a direct line for you to phone if you have any concerns about the way young people are treated. The number is 0808 100 4001. Or speak to our Welfare Officer Karen Townend.

CONTACT ARRANGEMENTS
Now that our new squad criteria are in place, it is important that parents contact the club IN ADVANCE if their children are unable to swim (eg because of illness, exams, holidays etc). The Club now has a Yahoo account which is accessible by the Committee and Steve. If your child can not attend a training session please use hertfordsc@yahoo.co.uk . (Paul Fitzsimmons MUST be contacted directly for late unavailability for galas).

WATER POLO TASTER SESSIONS
The Water Polo section have been offering taster sessions to Age Group/Senior swimmers at the end of training on Wednesdays until about 9.00pm. Boys and Girls are welcome. If you are interested please contact Neil Cook.

SQUAD CRITERIA
The Committee have made some revisions to Squad Criteria. This is to enable swimmers to move more easily between squads. New criteria are here.

Did you know the club has an adult section? They swim on Thursday evenings from 7.15 to 8.15. There is a simple training schedule for those who want it or just do your own thing! Any member of the club 16+ is welcome to attend. If you are interested speak to Margaret.

IF YOU WEAR A HAT MAKE IT A HERTFORD ONE!
Please would all swimmers remember that ONLY Hertford hats should be worn at Galas & Open Meets when members are representing the club. Poolside staff will have a few spare hats for swimmers to borrow. Anyone wearing a non Hertford hat will be asked to stand down from their event.
