Text Box: CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008

This year’s club championships will be held on 29th June, 6th & 13th of July at Hartham Pool (5.30 for 6.00). Events will be the same as last year however weeks 1 & 2 will be reversed so we will be starting with Backstroke & Butterfly on week 1 then Breaststroke/IM week 2 and finishing with Freestyle on weeks 3.

Application forms are now available and MUST be returned by Wednesday 4th June if you want to compete. All events will be swum on a Heat Declared Winner basis however we will be able to use our new Hy-Tek software to sort swimmers by PB’s (as of 4th June) and to spearhead heats making it much fairer to everyone. In order to compete you must have been a member of the club before 31st January 2008 (but you can still do a “time only” swim if you joined after that and would like to take part anyway.)

This year on a trial basis, we are introducing a points system to try and encourage swimmers to compete in the maximum possible number of events they are competent in, rather than their favourite or best ones. A similar system is run at the County Championships called BAGCAT,s, but we propose to have a much simpler system where swimmers achieve 6 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 6th place.

Points can be achieved in each age group event - 8, 9, 10, 11, 12/13, 14/15 & 16 and over, along with the 200 freestyle event, except for the 8 year olds due to time constraints. These scoring events will be indicated on the Club Championship form. In the 200 freestyle event, points will be awarded to the top six swimmers in each of the seven age groups for both boys and girls. Other than the 200 freestyle already mentioned, points cannot be achieved in any other junior or senior events or the individual medleys, again due to time constraints.

After the conclusion of all the events, the individual points will be calculated and after checking, will be announced as soon as possible. If there is a tie in any of the age groups, a count back of the highest places achieved will hopefully split the swimmers. A medal for the top girl and boy achieving the highest score in each of the seven age groups from 8 year olds and upwards will be presented at the presentation evening in October.

When entering events, please consider your child’s ability to complete a race which must be swum within ASA laws, their ability to finish an event comfortably and that they wish to enter.

If this trial is successful, we intend to make this a feature of future club championships.
